Saran District, Administrative district in Bihar, India.
The administrative region spans 2,641 square kilometers in eastern Bihar, bordered by the Ganges River along its southern boundary with Chhapra as capital.
Archaeological findings in Chirand, located 10 kilometers east of Chhapra, reveal continuous human settlements from the Neolithic age through the Iron Age.
The district name originates from Sarangaranya, referring to an ancient forest where deer populations inhabited the natural landscape before human settlement.
The region contains three subdivisions - Chhapra, Marhaura, and Sonpur - encompassing 1,807 villages and 20 community development blocks for administrative purposes.
Local residents speak Bhojpuri as their primary language, while the district maintains a literacy rate of 72.57 percent according to the 2011 census.
