Karaikal district, Administrative district in Puducherry, India
Karaikal district spans across coastal territory with one municipality and five commune panchayats managing twenty-seven villages along the Coromandel Coast.
The region transferred to French control in 1739 through Sayaji, the exiled Rajah of Thanjavur, and remained under French governance until 1954.
The district holds significance as the birthplace of Karaikal Ammaiyar, one of three women among the 63 Nayanmars who dedicated her life to Lord Shiva.
The district maintains thirty-seven Common Service Centers, twelve police stations, and multiple educational institutions serving its population of 200,222 residents.
Local fishermen communities, numbering over 25,000 individuals, operate along the 26-kilometer coastline, contributing to the maritime economy of the region.
