Gorkhaland, Proposed state in Darjeeling district, India
Gorkhaland is a proposed territory in the hill regions of northern West Bengal, encompassing the Darjeeling district and surrounding areas in the eastern Himalayas. The region is divided into three administrative subdivisions and governed through a semi-autonomous administration.
The movement for Gorkhaland emerged in the 1980s through the Gorkha National Liberation Front, seeking recognition and self-governance. This eventually resulted in the establishment of a semi-autonomous administration structure in 2012.
The region is shaped by Nepali-speaking communities who maintain traditional music, dance, and local festivals as part of daily life. These customs are visible throughout the area and influence how people celebrate and gather together.
The region is organized into three hill subdivisions: Darjeeling, Kurseong, and Mirik, each with distinct characteristics and entry points. Visitors should expect mountain terrain and variable weather conditions depending on the season.
The region is known for its tea gardens that produce some of the world's finest and most aromatic tea varieties. This tea heritage has developed over generations and remains central to the local economy.
