Mangaluru Airport, International airport in Mangaluru taluk, India
Mangaluru Airport is a commercial aerodrome in Karnataka that handles domestic and international connections between India's west coast and destinations across South Asia and the Middle East. The facility sits on elevated terrain overlooking surrounding lowlands and includes a main terminal building for all departures and arrivals.
Operations began on December 25, 1951, when the facility opened as Bajpe Aerodrome with a ceremony led by the Prime Minister of that time. Over the following decades, the site expanded to accommodate growing traffic between the coastal region and the rest of the country.
The terminal reflects coastal Karnataka design through its architectural choices and serves passengers traveling between the Arabian Sea region and cities across India. Signage appears in multiple scripts to accommodate travelers from Kerala, Karnataka, and international destinations along the Gulf routes.
State bus services run regularly from different points in the city to the terminal, providing a reliable option for arrivals. Taxis operate around the clock if you travel at times when buses are less frequent.
The runway ranks among only two tabletop runways in all of India and requires pilots to follow special approach procedures because of the abrupt elevation changes from the surrounding terrain. Aircraft must make precise altitude adjustments during descent, as the runway ends on a raised plateau.
