Electronic City, Industrial and technology district in Bangalore Urban district, India
Electronic City is an industrial and technology district in Bengaluru Urban district, India, extending across a wide tract divided into four phases. These phases host dozens of manufacturing plants, software development centers and office complexes connected by a mix of broad roads and rapid transit links.
R. K. Baliga founded the area in 1978 through the government body KEONICS to establish Bangalore as a hub for the electronics industry. The first phase opened for operations a few years later and attracted international manufacturers and Indian software firms that drove the growth of the local IT sector.
The name reflects the concentration of technology firms operating here since the late 1970s. The area now functions as a workplace for IT professionals who work in office towers, manufacturing halls and research centers spread across multiple zones.
The elevated expressway from Silk Board offers a faster route for commuters traveling daily to offices and plants, reducing congestion on ground-level roads. Public buses run regularly to the main zones, and taxis wait outside the larger business buildings.
The area is managed by the organization ELCITA, which operates digital health services and air quality monitoring stations to track conditions for residents and workers. These services are accessible through mobile applications and provide real-time data about the environment.
