Bengaluru Urban district, Administrative district in Karnataka, India
Bengaluru Urban is an administrative district in the state of Karnataka, covering the capital city and its immediate surroundings. The district spreads across several taluks and includes densely built urban areas as well as smaller towns and villages on the edges.
The district was formed in 1986 when authorities split the original Bangalore district into two separate units to separate urban administration from rural areas. This reorganization aimed to better serve the growing city and its particular needs.
The area takes its name from Bangalore, now officially called Bengaluru, a word that traces back to an old Tamil expression about cooked beans. Kannada is the main language you hear on the streets, while Tamil and Telugu are also spoken in many neighborhoods, showing the linguistic mix of people who live here.
The different parts of the district are close to one another, so moving between them is usually straightforward. Visitors exploring beyond the capital city will find some smaller towns and villages in the rural areas that are quieter and less densely settled.
The district is one of the most densely populated regions in India and has one of the highest urbanization rates in the entire country. Most residents live in urban areas, which creates particular challenges for administration and infrastructure.
