Dodda Ganeshana Gudi, Hindu temple in Basavanagudi, Bengaluru, India
Dodda Ganeshana Gudi is a Hindu temple in the Basavanagudi neighborhood of Bengaluru, set on a rocky hill within Bugle Rock Park. The complex holds several granite shrines surrounded by low walls and paved walkways.
The temple was founded in the 16th century by Kempe Gowda during the expansion of Bengaluru. Later rulers expanded the complex and added more shrines that remain in use for ceremonies today.
The local name refers to a large Ganesha whose shrine stands at the entrance and is adorned by worshippers with flower garlands. The open grounds serve as a meeting point for families who gather under the courtyard trees after worship.
Access is via stone steps leading from the park up to the temple grounds, and visitors must remove shoes before entering the shrines. The best time for a quiet visit is early morning or late afternoon on weekdays.
The enormous granite Nandi statue measures roughly 15 feet (4.5 meters) in height and 20 feet (6 meters) in length, making it one of the largest bull statues in India. Devotees regularly apply layers of butter to the stone, building up thick coatings over the years.
