Venkatappa Art Gallery, Art gallery in Kasturba Road, Bangalore, India
The Venkatappa Art Gallery is an art museum in Bangalore with three floors housed in a modernist building next to a lotus pond near Cubbon Park. The building displays around 600 paintings by various Indian artists from different time periods.
The foundation stone was laid in 1967, but the project faced delays and opposition from artists before finally opening to the public in 1975. This marked a turning point for Bangalore's arts infrastructure at that time.
The gallery displays works by significant Indian artists and shows different phases of the country's artistic development. You can see how Indian art has evolved and changed over time through the pieces on display here.
Access is possible daily, but the space is closed on Mondays, so plan your visit for another day of the week. The fully air-conditioned building is straightforward to explore and you can spend several hours browsing the collection.
The second floor houses a special collection of works by a particular artist that was added during a renovation in the 1990s. This collection stands apart from the other gallery spaces and deserves focused attention.
