Avenue Road, Bengaluru, Commercial street in Chickpet district, Bengaluru, India
Avenue Road is a commercial street in central Bengaluru that runs through the Chickpet district, connecting Mysore Road to K G Road. Shops and trading establishments of many kinds line the street from one end to the other.
The street was once known as Doddapete and was already a trading area during the colonial period. The Rice Memorial Church, which stands along the road, was built on the site of a London Mission chapel that dates to 1834.
Avenue Road has long been a place where merchants sell fabrics, books, and jewelry in small, closely packed shops along the road. Walking its length gives a real sense of how everyday trading life in central Bengaluru looks and feels.
The street is easy to reach on foot from Majestic Bus Terminal and Bangalore City Railway Station, which both sit nearby and serve as useful landmarks. A weekday visit tends to show the road at its most active, with traders and buyers moving through in full swing.
One stretch of the street has long served as a center for books in Kannada and other languages, with publishers and booksellers working side by side. This section is one of the few spots in the city where second-hand, rare, and new books sit together in a small area.
