Dakshinamukha Nandi Tirtha Kalyani Temple, Hindu temple in Malleswaram, Bengaluru, India.
The Dakshinamukha Nandi Tirtha Kalyani is a Hindu temple in Malleswaram, a neighborhood in Bengaluru, Karnataka. A stone bull stands on a platform above the stone phallus, with clear water continuously flowing from its mouth.
The entire temple complex lay buried underground until 1997, when local residents stopped a planned construction project. The excavation revealed the chamber with the bull and the stone phallus, which had likely been under sediment for centuries.
The name Dakshinamukha refers to the stone bull facing south, a rare orientation in this religious tradition. Visitors see worshippers collecting the flowing water and using it for prayers as they walk around the sacred space.
The shrine is located on second Temple Street in the Vyalikaval neighborhood and opens during morning and evening hours. Visitors should follow common guidelines like removing shoes and speaking quietly, especially during prayer times.
The source of the water flowing from the bull's mouth has never been traced despite several investigations. Geologists and engineers have tried to track its underground path, but the origin remains unknown to this day.
