Bengaluru Palace, Royal palace in Vasanth Nagar, India
Bengaluru Palace is a royal residence in Vasanth Nagar that combines Tudor and Scottish Gothic elements with fortified towers, arched windows, and stone facades. The building sits within landscaped grounds featuring lawns, gardens, and a central granite structure flanked by multiple turrets.
King Chamaraja Wadiyar bought the land from Reverend J Garrett in 1874 and began construction modeled after Windsor Castle. The building was completed in 1878 and served as a royal residence until the mid-20th century.
The rooms feature carved wooden furniture and painted ceilings that reflect the lifestyle maintained by the royal family over several generations. Photographs along the walls show members of the Wadiyar lineage during ceremonies, hunts, and formal gatherings.
The entrance lies along Palace Cross Road and can be reached by auto-rickshaw, bus, or taxi from central areas of the city. Early morning or late afternoon visits offer cooler conditions and softer light for exploring the grounds and exterior details.
The grounds include an equestrian training center with stables and a specialized weighing chair used to measure jockeys before competitions. These facilities reflect the royal family's long association with horse racing and breeding programs.
