National Gallery of Modern Art, Bengaluru, Art museum in Palace Road, Bengaluru, India.
The National Gallery of Modern Art is an art museum in Bengaluru housed in a heritage building alongside a contemporary gallery wing. The collection comprises around five hundred artworks representing different styles and periods of Indian art history.
The building was originally Manikyavelu Mansion, a residence of a Mysore prince who gained wealth through mining ventures. In the 1960s the property was auctioned and later converted into an art museum.
The museum displays works by artists who shaped Indian modern art, such as Raja Ravi Verma and Amrita Sher-Gil. Visitors can observe how artistic expression evolved from the 18th century to today.
The museum is open Tuesday through Sunday and visitors should wear comfortable clothing as there is much to explore. Guided tours are offered on select days and help visitors understand the collection more deeply.
The museum maintains an art reference library with materials that researchers and students consult for deeper study. A mirror pool and fountains in the outdoor spaces create a tranquil spot for reflection between galleries.
