Bhimbetka rock shelters, Cave with prehistoric art in Raisen District, India
The archaeological complex contains 760 rock shelters spread across seven hills, with 500 shelters displaying ancient paintings in red, white, and green colors.
Archaeological evidence indicates continuous human settlement from the Upper Paleolithic period through the late Acheulian to the late Mesolithic until the 2nd century BCE.
The rock paintings depict scenes of daily activities, including hunting expeditions, gatherings, musical instruments, and numerous animal figures from different historical periods.
Located 45 kilometers southeast of Bhopal in Madhya Pradesh, the site requires a minimum of three hours to explore the main decorated shelters.
The Auditorium Cave, the largest shelter at Bhimbetka, features a right-angled cross structure aligned with cardinal directions and contains cup-shaped depressions dating 100,000 years.
