Bathinda

Bathinda, Historic fortified city in Punjab, India

Bathinda is a city in Bathinda District in Punjab, India, that spreads across the Malwa Region. The fifth-largest city in the state sits at 210 meters (689 feet) and has a population of around 286,000 people.

King Kanishka built the Qila Mubarak fort in the 2nd century, which later served as a stronghold for many rulers. Razia Sultana, the first female sultan of Delhi, was imprisoned here in the 13th century.

The city takes its name from King Bhatti, a legendary ruler said to have governed the area centuries ago. Local markets sell traditional Phulkari embroidery and Punjabi juttis, while gurdwaras and temples shape the daily rhythm of the streets.

The railway station connects the city with other parts of Punjab and beyond. National highways lead in several directions, making travel to surrounding regions easier.

Groundwater here cannot be used for drinking because of pollution from industry and pesticides. Locals rely on piped or bottled water for everyday use.
