Baranagar, Metropolitan municipality in Kolkata region, India

Baranagar is an urban municipality in the Kolkata region that spreads along the Hooghly River. The place lies in North 24 Parganas district and hosts several hospitals as well as the Indian Statistical Institute campus, which provides important research and educational facilities.

The settlement was founded in 1869 as North Suburban Municipality and received its current name in 1889. This renaming marked a turning point in its development into a major urban center in the region.

The place is known for celebrations honoring Durga, Saraswati, and Kali that residents observe throughout the year. These religious traditions shape daily life and create moments of gathering in the community.

The area is divided into 34 administrative wards that provide medical, educational, and public services to all residents. Visitors find hospital complexes and the institute's research facilities well distributed throughout the area.

In earlier times, Dutch settlers operated a facility here that processed and exported pork products. This chapter shaped the place's original name in a lasting way.
