Nivedita Setu, Cable-stayed bridge in Bally and Baranagar, India
Nivedita Setu is a cable-stayed bridge spanning 880 meters across the Hooghly River with a roadway width of 29 meters. The structure connects Bally and Baranagar, serving as a major crossing for the local road network.
Construction started in 2004 to replace the aging Vivekananda Setu, which had served the crossing since 1932. The new crossing was needed to handle increasing traffic demands in the region.
The bridge carries the name of Sister Nivedita, an Irish educator who devoted herself to teaching and social work across India. Her legacy remains present in how locals reference this crossing in their daily conversations.
The crossing is open around the clock and connects National Highway 2 with the international airport serving the region. Drivers should expect busy conditions during peak hours, especially in morning and evening.
The structure was built using India's first multi-span extradosed cable design, an innovative construction method at the time. This technical approach gained international recognition from engineering organizations.
