Vidisha, Ancient city in central Madhya Pradesh, India
Vidisha is a settlement in central Madhya Pradesh within the district of the same name, positioned at 424 meters elevation near the Betwa River. The surroundings consist of fields, river plains, and scattered ruins embedded in the present-day layout.
The settlement emerged in the 6th century BCE under the name Besnagar as a trading center and changed rule through different dynasties. Over time, it grew through pilgrims and merchants who established themselves near the river valleys.
The name of this settlement traces back to trade traditions visible in the narrow lanes and market quarters. Around the temple complexes, travelers meet pilgrims who visit the shrines and light incense along the riverbanks.
The railway station connects the settlement to routes between Delhi, Chennai, and Mumbai and sits near a government medical college. Most temples concentrate in the western section, while the pillar stands along the northern riverbank.
A stone pillar from 150 BCE carries inscriptions in Brahmi script commissioned by a Greek envoy. It stands on the northern bank of the Vais River and shows traces of early diplomatic connections.
