Koovagam, Religious festival in Koovagam village, Tamil Nadu, India.

Koovagam is a village in Kallakurichi district, Tamil Nadu, that hosts a major festival centered on the Koothandavar Temple during April and May each year. The celebration draws tens of thousands of visitors and spans 18 days, with religious rituals, processions, and ceremonies shaping the village's rhythm.

The festival traces back to an ancient epic tale where a warrior figure requested a place of honor before his sacrifice, with the divine realm granting this wish. Over generations, this evolved into an annual celebration that preserved meaning and established the village as a sacred site.

Thousands of transgender women participate in ceremonial marriages at the temple, wearing traditional bridal attire and receiving thaalis from temple priests. This practice reflects centuries-old recognition that gives these women an honored place in community celebrations.

The village is located in a rural area and is most easily visited during the festival period when additional transport and amenities are available. It is wise to arrive early or stay overnight, as crowds can grow very large during the main ceremonies.

During the festival, participants undergo a striking transformation: they begin as brides in colorful clothing and then become widows dressed in white. This symbolically represents the simultaneous joy and sorrow connected to the revered story.
