West Singhbhum district, Administrative district in Kolhan division, India
West Singhbhum is an administrative district in southern Jharkhand marked by forests, hills, and river systems that form its natural boundaries. The area is divided into several administrative blocks, with Chaibasa functioning as the main city and administrative center.
The district was created in 1990 when Singhbhum was divided, ending a longer period as part of the Chota Nagpur region under British administration. The split reflected post-independence administrative reforms in India.
The Ho community shapes daily life here with their own language and traditional customs. They coexist with Bengali, Hindi, and Santali speakers, creating a mixed cultural setting where different groups live side by side.
Chaibasa serves as the main administrative hub and entry point for visitors, where government offices and transportation connections are located. Local buses and taxis are the common ways to travel within the district.
The area remained politically independent during the Mughal and Maratha periods and established its first formal contact with outside powers in 1767 through British administrators. This long period of standing apart from larger empires shaped its political development in distinctive ways.
