Kodachadri, Mountain peak in Shimoga District, India
Kodachadri is a mountain standing 1,343 meters (4,406 feet) tall in the Western Ghats of Shimoga District, where steep rock faces and dense rainforest shape the landscape. The ascent passes through different vegetation zones, from tropical forest at the base to open grassland near the summit.
Stone formations in the area point to early human settlements long before the place became a pilgrimage destination. Over the centuries, ascetics and scholars retreated here, giving the mountain its reputation as a place of meditation.
The peak takes its name from a sacred site where pilgrims still visit the Sarvajna temple today, lending the place its spiritual meaning. Hikers encounter small shrines and prayer flags along the way, showing how closely faith and nature are woven together here.
The starting point for the hike lies a few kilometers outside Kollur, where jeeps drive up to a higher point. From there, a steep trail leads to the summit, which can become slippery when wet and requires sturdy footwear.
On clear days, the summit offers a view of the Arabian Sea about 35 kilometers away. The forests below shelter langurs and occasionally leopards, though they mostly stay hidden.
