Murudeshwara, Religious site in Uttara Kannada District, India.
Murudeshwara is a temple town in Uttara Kannada District, India, built on a hill at a peninsula jutting into the Arabian Sea. The entire site includes shrines, a tall entrance tower, and a monumental statue that shapes the coastal skyline.
The temple was built on a site linked in ancient texts to the legend of Ravana and Ganesha. In the 20th century, a local businessman greatly expanded the complex and added the large Shiva statue.
The name comes from the local Kannada word for Lord Shiva, who is worshipped here as Murudesha. Daily, devotees visit the complex to perform rituals at the shrine or walk around the large statue.
The site sits close to the western coast railway line and can be reached via National Highway 66. Visitors should wear comfortable shoes, as the paths include many steps and platforms overlooking the sea.
The Shiva statue is surrounded by a gopuram that stands directly beside the figure in an unusual perspective. Visitors can climb a viewing platform inside the tower to look out over the entire coast.
