Mumba Devi Temple, Hindu temple in Bhuleshwar, Mumbai, India
Mumba Devi is a Hindu temple in the Bhuleshwar neighborhood of central Mumbai, Maharashtra. Inside stands a statue of the goddess with an orange face and silver crown, flanked by the goddesses Annapurna and Jagdamba on both sides.
The original temple was built in 1737 at the site of present-day Victoria Terminus. The British colonial administration later prompted the relocation to the current site in the Marine Lines-East area.
Mumba Devi serves as the guardian goddess of the Koli fishers who first settled on the seven islands, and the city name Mumbai comes from her. Many worshippers visit the shrine to express wishes and ask for blessings, often bringing offerings with them.
The temple holds six daily prayer ceremonies that visitors are welcome to attend. The complex lies in the busy old quarter, so expect crowded lanes and narrow access points.
Worshippers press coins with nails into wooden blocks inside the complex to make wishes and seek blessings. This practice has left hundreds of shining coins embedded across the wooden surfaces over the years.
