Linganamakki Dam, Hydroelectric dam in Karnataka, India
Linganamakki Dam is a hydroelectric structure built across the Sharavathi River, rising 61.26 meters high. It creates a large reservoir that stores water for power generation and other regional needs.
Construction began in 1964 under the Karnataka State Government and the facility became operational in 1975. It was developed as part of the Sharavathi hydroelectric project that transformed power supply in the region.
The reservoir supports fishing activities for local people and plays a central role in irrigation for nearby farming communities. Water from it flows through channels that sustain agricultural lands across the region.
The dam sits about 9 kilometers from Jog Falls and can be visited as part of exploring that natural area. Access is sometimes limited during monsoon season, so visiting in drier months works better for viewing the landscape.
This hydroelectric facility supplies significant power to the state's electrical grid, supporting industrial operations across the region. The dam plays a major role in keeping factories and cities running in southern India.
