Bahu Fort, Hindu fortification in Jammu, India
Bahu Fort is a sandstone fortification in Jammu, India, perched on a high plateau above the Tawi River. Eight octagonal towers connect through thick walls to form an enclosed defensive structure.
Raja Bahulochan ordered the fort built in ancient times to control the valley below. Maharaja Gulab Singh carried out major renovations and reinforcements during the 19th century.
Inside the grounds stands a white marble temple honoring the goddess Kali, known here as Bawe Wali Mata. Locals visit throughout the year to pray and offer gifts at her shrine.
Local guides walk visitors through the chambers and passages within the walls. The neighboring park, Bagh-e-Bahu, offers views over the city and the surrounding region.
During Bahu Mela, thousands of pilgrims gather here twice a year during the Navaratras festivals. Market stalls line the pathways around the temple, and special ceremonies take place inside.
