Akhnoor Fort, 18th-century fortification in Akhnoor, India
Akhnoor Fort is a stone fort complex on the right bank of the Chenab River with strong defensive walls, watchtowers, and a two-story palace structure. The site contains traditional temples and residential areas that reflect the different functions of the original military stronghold.
Raja Tej Singh began construction in 1762, and his successor Raja Dhian Singh completed it in 1802 as a military stronghold. The fortification served as a strategic defense position during the regional conflicts of that period.
The fort displays decorated arches and mural paintings that reflect northern Indian military architecture. These ornamental details and preserved living quarters allow visitors today to understand how people once lived within its walls.
The fort is open to visitors year-round without any entrance fee. It is best explored during daylight hours to fully appreciate the walls, towers, and internal layouts of the complex.
Archaeological excavations beneath the fort uncovered remains of a 5000-year-old settlement with Harappan artifacts. These discoveries reveal that the area was inhabited long before the fort was built.
