Vaishno Devi Temple, Hindu temple in Trikuta Mountains, Katra, India
Vaishno Devi Temple sits inside a cave at 1,585 meters elevation in the Trikuta Mountains and houses three natural rock formations inside. The cave itself is about 30 meters deep and pilgrims must move through narrow passages to reach the inner sanctum.
A management structure for religious sites was set up in 1846 under Maharaja Gulab Singh to oversee the cave and surrounding facilities. During the 20th century, the paths were developed and a helicopter service was introduced to ease access.
The name refers to a goddess in female form and three rock shapes inside stand for different divine aspects that pilgrims visit one by one. Devotees leave their shoes outside and wash their feet before entering the cave, a custom maintained on all days of the year.
The walk from Katra to the cave typically takes between four and six hours, depending on pace and breaks, and the path is largely paved with rest points along the route. Those who prefer not to walk the entire distance can take a helicopter to Sanjichhat, which leaves only two kilometers on foot.
The cave fills partly with water during the monsoon season and pilgrims must then wade through ankle-deep water to reach the sanctum. Also, visitors often bring coconuts and sweets that are distributed to other pilgrims after being blessed.
