Katra, Religious pilgrimage town in Reasi district, India
Katra is a settlement at the foot of the Trikuta Mountains in Reasi district, sitting at 875 meters (2870 feet) elevation. The Banganga River runs through the area, where lodgings, shops, and registration points for visitors line the streets.
The area became a separate administrative unit on October 21, 2014. The decision came during a territorial reform that divided several settlements into new subdivisions.
Hindu pilgrims from across India register here before beginning their climb to the mountain temple. The streets are filled with vendors selling prasad, flowers, and incense for offerings, while guests stay in simple lodgings before starting their ascent.
The settlement is reached via National Highway 144, with regular train connections from the railway station. Helicopter flights operate from Jammu Airport, saving time when roads are crowded.
Scientists discovered large lithium deposits here in the Salal-Haimana region. The findings lie in the mountains above the river valley, where geological surveys brought rare minerals to light.
