Jorasanko Thakur Bari, Historical palace in Jorasanko, Kolkata, India.
Jorasanko Thakur Bari is a mansion in Jorasanko in Kolkata that now serves as a museum preserving the history of the Tagore family. The three-story structure extends across several inner courtyards and shows traditional Bengali building elements with carved wooden decorations on windows, doors, and balconies.
The Tagore family built the estate in the late 18th century as their main residence in the city. Here Rabindranath Tagore was born in 1861, who later received the Nobel Prize in Literature and became a key figure in Bengali culture.
The building takes its name from the Thakur family, as the Tagores were originally known, and still shows how a wealthy Bengali family lived in the 19th century. In one of the inner courtyards stands the room where Tagore was born, and visitors can see furniture and everyday objects from his childhood there.
The museum inside opens Tuesday through Sunday between half past ten in the morning and half past four in the afternoon. Visitors can explore the rooms at their own pace, but should allow time to view the different halls and exhibits in comfort.
The collection includes over seven hundred paintings, manuscripts, and personal belongings of the family along with works by artists of the Bengali Renaissance. Among the exhibits lies a wedding invitation that Rabindranath Tagore himself composed and that is still preserved in its original condition.
