Magen David Synagogue, Renaissance Revival synagogue in Kolkata, India
The Magen David Synagogue is a place of worship built in Renaissance Revival style in Kolkata featuring a brick red exterior and arched entry gates. The structure rises to 43 meters in height and stands at the intersection of Brabourne Road and Canning Street.
The synagogue was built in 1884 by Elias David Ezra to honor his father David Joseph Ezra. This construction reflects the presence of Baghdadi Jewish traders who had settled in India and established their religious institutions.
The interior displays memorial plaques and stained glass windows featuring Hebrew symbols that reflect the religious significance for the community. These artworks show the faith and history of those who prayed here.
Access requires permission from the Archaeological Survey of India, so arrange authorization before your visit. The site is located in central Kolkata and is reachable by public transportation.
The interior features a raised bimah for Torah readings and separate upper balconies reserved for women during religious ceremonies. This arrangement preserves traditional Jewish worship practices within the space.
