Ananthagiri Hills, Mountain range and forest area in Vikarabad district, India.
Ananthagiri Hills is a range of low, rounded hills covered in dense green forest in Vikarabad district, Telangana, rising from a flat plain of fields and scattered trees. The Musi River, also called Muchkunda, begins here about 5 km from Vikarabad town. Ancient caves, medieval fort structures and the Anantha Padmanabha Swamy Temple stand within the forested area.
The hills are one of the earliest inhabited areas of the region, with ancient caves, medieval fort structures and a temple showing the area's antiquity. The Anantha Padmanabha Swamy Temple here was built about 400 years ago by a Nizam. The Musi River rises in these hills at about 2,168 feet and flows east through Hyderabad to join the Krishna at Wadapally in Nalgonda district.
The hills take their name from Anantha Padmanabha Swamy, the form of Vishnu honoured in the temple here. Telugu tradition holds that the sage Muchkunda slept in a cave on these slopes and that the Musi, called Muchkunda River, rises from a spring below the shrine. A tank beside the temple, Bhageerathagundam, is believed to grant health and wishes to those who bathe in it.
The hills are accessible year-round, though October to March brings the most pleasant conditions with mild weather for outdoor activities. During these months, temperatures make walking and exploring the paths comfortable.
The Musi, called Muchkunda in local tradition, rises from a spring below the Anantha Padmanabha Swamy Temple and flows east through Hyderabad to join the Krishna at Wadapally, Nalgonda district, after about 240 km. Legend links the spring to the sage Muchukunda, whose bath water became the river.
