Chandravalli

Chandravalli is an archaeological site in Chitradurga where excavations reveal brick walls, stone drains, gravel floors, and hearths spread across an area surrounded by three hills. The site also contains caves and a temple, showing how people lived and worshipped in this location long ago.

The site shows settlements from about 3000 years ago with discoveries of Roman silver coins and artifacts from the Satavahana, Hoysala, and Vijayanagara periods. These findings reveal how the area was occupied and used by different peoples over many centuries.

The caves here, called Ankali Mutt, were a retreat for saints and hold a temple with carvings and writings from ancient times. People visited these caves seeking spiritual practice and shelter, making it a sacred place for generations.

The site is open daily and is best reached by auto-rickshaw or car from the center of Chitradurga, which is a short ride away. It helps to wear sturdy shoes since the ground is uneven and you will need to walk around hills and explore different areas.

A large tiger engraving on a boulder shows distinctive features like bent legs, prominent whiskers, and a checkered pattern across its body. This rare stone carving is one of the most striking artworks visitors encounter at the site.
