Chandravalli, Archaeological site in Chitradurga, India.

Chandravalli is an archaeological site of national importance in Chitradurga, India, set among three hills and containing the remains of old settlements, caves, and a temple. Excavations have uncovered brick walls, stone drains, gravel floors, and hearths across the area.

The site shows traces of settlement going back roughly 3000 years, and finds such as Roman silver coins point to early trade links with distant regions. Later, the Satavahana, Hoysala, and Vijayanagara dynasties each left their mark here.

The caves known as Ankali Mutt served as a retreat for saints and still contain a temple with old carvings and inscriptions on the rock walls. Visitors can see how this place was used as a sacred space across many generations.

The site is open every day and is most easily reached by auto-rickshaw or car from the center of Chitradurga. The ground is uneven throughout, so sturdy footwear is a good idea before heading out to explore the hills and open areas.

A large tiger is engraved on a boulder, shown with bent legs, prominent whiskers, and a checkered pattern across its body. This rare stone carving is easy to miss, but it stands out as one of the most memorable details on the site.
