Dowleswaram Barrage, Water Heritage Site and dam in East Godavari district, India.

Dowleswaram Barrage is a dam that stretches across the Godavari River in four sections, with multiple gates that control water flow. The structure works by regulating water to supply irrigation to farmlands throughout East and West Godavari districts.

A British engineer named Arthur Cotton completed construction of this facility in 1852 and fundamentally changed the region. The project made it possible to convert wetlands into productive farmland and created a new era of irrigation farming.

The nearby Sir Arthur Cotton Museum displays exhibits about irrigation engineering and shows how water management transformed agriculture in this region. Visitors can see how human engineering made natural water resources work for farming communities.

The dam is easy to reach and works well for a day visit, especially if you want to tour the nearby museum. The best time to visit is during the dry season when water levels and light conditions are most favorable.

The structure was deliberately built in four separate arms to allow the river to flow freely during construction. This clever design approach meant the project could progress year after year without blocking the natural water movement.
