Dolphin Lighthouse, Maritime navigation point in Mumbai Harbor, India
Dolphin Lighthouse is a cylindrical maritime structure standing near the Gateway of India in Mumbai Harbor. It comprises a brick tower with a white keeper's house and lantern room at its top.
The structure was built in 1850 by the Mumbai Port Trust as a navigation aid for vessels entering the harbor. It served as an essential marker for maritime traffic during the port's busiest periods of growth.
The lighthouse participates in the annual Navy Day celebrations during December, when its illumination creates patterns across the Mumbai Harbor.
The lighthouse is visible from the waterfront promenade and can be approached by boat for a closer view. Best viewing times are early morning or at sunset when light highlights the structure clearly.
The light beam follows a distinctive signal pattern of four white flashes followed by one red flash, making it instantly recognizable to ship captains navigating at night. This coded flashing system allows mariners to quickly identify the lighthouse even in poor visibility conditions.
