Koteshwar Mahadev, Hindu temple in Rudraprayag, India.
Koteshwar Mahadev is a Hindu cave temple on the bank of the Alaknanda river in Rudraprayag, Uttarakhand. The temple is built inside natural rock formations that open into several chambers, with narrow passages leading to a central shrine housing a sacred Shiva lingam.
Local tradition holds that the god Shiva rested and meditated in this cave on his way to Kedarnath, which gave the site its sacred standing from an early time. Over the centuries the natural cave was gradually shaped into an organized place of pilgrimage, drawing devotees from across the region.
Worshippers remove their shoes before entering the cave and walk single file through the rock passages to reach the inner sanctum. The Shiva lingam at the center is garlanded daily, and the smell of incense and the sound of bells mark the rhythm of devotion here.
The temple sits on the riverbank just a short walk from the center of Rudraprayag, making it easy to reach on foot. Inside, the rock corridors are narrow and sometimes low, so comfortable clothing and a willingness to move slowly are helpful, and shoes must be left at the entrance.
Although the temple sits along the main pilgrimage route to Kedarnath, many travelers pass through it quickly without realizing it is a destination in its own right. The ceiling of the cave shows natural mineral formations that catch the light of the temple lamps and glow faintly in orange and gold.
