Naranarayan Setu, Railway and road bridge in Jogighopa, India

The Naranarayan Setu stretches over two kilometers on two levels and connects Jogighopa to Pancharatna across the Brahmaputra River. Railway tracks run on the lower level, while the upper level serves as a road with four lanes.

Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee opened this crossing in April 1998, making it the third structure over the Brahmaputra to enter service. Its construction created a new link between Bongaigaon and Goalpara districts, which previously relied on ferries.

This crossing takes its name from Nara Narayan, a Koch king who ruled during the 16th century in this region. His name appears on signs at both ends, reminding travelers of the historical importance of this kingdom to Assam.

Travelers should be cautious during heavy rains or monsoon season, as visibility on the upper level can be limited. Both levels operate at the same time, so it is wise to allow extra time during morning and evening rush hours.

Engineers used 29,200 tons of steel and developed India's first railway span of 125 meters for this project. This technical achievement became a reference point for later crossings of major rivers in the country.

Official opening: April 15, 1998
