Palayamkottai, human settlement in India

Palayamkottai is a suburb and settlement in the Tirunelveli region of Tamil Nadu located east of the Thamirabarani River. The town holds many historic schools and colleges including the century-old St. John's College and institutions for blind and deaf students, and features open grounds and sports facilities such as Anna Stadium.

The location was originally home to an old fort that played a role in administering nearby districts, though today only ruins remain hidden among old structures. The town later developed into an educational center after missionaries founded schools in the 19th century and gained historical importance through the birthplace of Veerapandiya Kattabomman, a freedom fighter.

Palayamkottai carries the nickname 'Oxford of South India' and serves as an important educational hub that shapes local identity and pride. The town shows strong Hindu traditions through temples like Gopalaswamy with ancient wall paintings, while Christian institutions such as St. Xavier's Church and the Jesuit-run college have also left their mark on the community's character.

The location is easily reached by car or bus as it sits just a few kilometers from Tirunelveli along a busy highway connecting to other cities. Visitors will find hotels, restaurants serving South Indian food, and clinics there, plus access to markets like Ulavar Santhai where fresh vegetables and fruits are sold directly.

The Sulochana Mudaliar Bridge, a structure over 175 years old crossing the Tamirabarani River, was built by a local resident who sold all his property to fund the project. This bridge connects the two cities and remains in daily use today, reflecting the generosity of its founder.
