Pelling, Mountain town in Gyalshing district, India
Pelling is a mountain town in Gyalshing district, Sikkim, situated at an elevation of approximately 2150 meters. The settlement offers year-round views of the snow-covered Kanchenjunga mountain range from multiple vantage points.
The settlement grew in significance due to its proximity to Rabdentse, the royal capital of Sikkim from 1670 to 1814. After this capital was abandoned, the area eventually developed into an important regional center.
The town blends traditions of Nepali, Lepcha, and Bhutia peoples, visible in local festivals, traditional clothing, and religious ceremonies at Pemayangtse Monastery. Visitors encounter these cultural expressions through daily interactions and at sacred sites throughout the settlement.
The town is accessible via regular bus services from Gangtok and Siliguri, with numerous hotels and guesthouses available throughout the area. Visit during the drier months when mountain visibility is clearest.
The nearby Khecheopalri Lake maintains a leaf-free surface despite being surrounded by dense forest, as birds remove any fallen foliage from the water. This unusual phenomenon draws the attention of visitors who notice the pristine water.
