Pobitora Wildlife Sanctuary

Pobitora Wildlife Sanctuary is a protected area in Assam along the southern bank of the Brahmaputra, mostly covered by grasslands and wetlands. The terrain is flat and becomes partly flooded during the monsoon season, creating a particular type of vegetation.

The government established the reserve in the late 1980s to protect rhinoceroses and their habitat in this region. Before that, the area was part of a larger wetland without any special legal status.

The name comes from the local language and refers to the landscape along the river, which has been part of life here for generations. Many residents from nearby villages work as guides or boatmen and share their knowledge about the animals with visitors.

The best time to visit is between November and April, when the weather is dry and animals are easier to observe. Jeep safaris and elephant rides are offered to move through the tall grass and see rhinoceroses up close.

Within a relatively small area, more one-horned rhinoceroses live here per square kilometer than anywhere else in the world. This high density makes sightings almost certain, even during short visits.
