Sanauli, Archaeological necropolis in Baraut, India
Sanauli is an archaeological site in Baraut, Uttar Pradesh, containing Bronze Age graves and burial chambers. The excavation spreads across open fields where hundreds of burial sites with underground chambers and metal grave goods have been uncovered.
The site was systematically excavated and documented from 2005, bringing to light objects dating back to around 1800 BCE. Findings suggest the community maintained contacts with trade routes of the early Bronze Age.
The name refers to an area where workshops for copper crafts once supported a community of metalworkers and traders. Visitors today can observe the layout of the graves, which shows how ceramic vessels and weapons were arranged beside the deceased according to fixed patterns.
The grounds are protected and may only be entered under supervision. Visitors should wear simple clothing and expect unpaved ground, as the excavation areas are not fully covered.
Among the finds are wooden coffins with copper fittings and small figurative representations, pointing to independent burial traditions. These coffins differ markedly from the grave forms of other regional cultures.
