Sita Mata Wildlife Sanctuary, Wildlife sanctuary in Pratapgarh and Chittorgarh districts, India
Sita Mata Wildlife Sanctuary is a protected area in Pratapgarh and Chittorgarh districts featuring dry deciduous forests where three geographic regions meet: the Malwa Plateau, Vindhya Hills, and Aravalli Range. The landscape alternates between open grasslands, dense forest patches, and rocky slopes fed by springs and streams.
The area was officially declared a protected forest zone by Rajasthan government on November 2, 1979. This designation aimed to preserve the ecological diversity and wildlife habitats of the region for future generations.
The sanctuary takes its name from Hindu tradition, referencing goddess Sita who is said to have stayed with sage Valmiki during her exile period. This story remains woven into the local identity today.
The sanctuary is accessible from sunrise to sunset, with October through March offering the most favorable conditions for wildlife spotting. Visitors should be prepared for uneven trails and bring comfortable footwear and plenty of water.
The sanctuary is home to flying squirrels known locally as Ashowa, which glide between trees using extended skin membranes. These animals are mostly nocturnal and rarely seen, making an encounter particularly special for visitors.
