Ariyannur Umbrellas, Prehistoric burial site in Thrissur district, India.
Ariyannur Umbrellas is a prehistoric burial site in Thrissur district that consists of six large stone structures, with four completely preserved and two partially damaged. The structures feature a distinctive form with a wide flat circular base supported by four vertical stone pillars.
These burial monuments date back to about 2000 BCE and were protected by the Archaeological Survey of India in 1951. This protection recognized their importance as evidence of the megalithic tradition that shaped the region.
The stone structures show ancient burial practices that were common in the region and reflect how early people lived and what mattered to them. They reveal how communities honored their dead and the importance these rituals held in daily life.
The site is easiest to reach from Thrissur railway station by arranging transportation. The best visibility and light for viewing the structures come in early morning hours when the sun is lower and fewer visitors are present.
The structures are locally called Kudaikkallu, which literally means umbrella roofs and refers to their distinctive shape. This name shows how local people have understood and described these ancient monuments through the ages.
