Chowannur burial cave

Chowannur is a rock-cut burial chamber in Thrissur with a hemispherical vault and benches along the sides. Five circular stone blocks on the western wall served to hold vessels and other burial offerings.

This burial chamber dates to prehistoric times and shows how early inhabitants of Kerala buried their dead. The site reflects the building methods and funeral customs of these ancient cultures.

The site is accessible through a single eastern entrance and is protected as a National Monument. Visitors should wear sturdy footwear and take time to explore the confined space and its architectural details.
