Chowannur burial cave is a rock-cut tomb in Thrissur district, Kerala, with a hemispherical vault and stone benches running along the interior walls. The chamber has a single entrance on the eastern side, and five circular stone blocks are fixed to the western wall, each designed to hold vessels.
The tomb dates to prehistoric times and belongs to a tradition of rock-cut burials found across parts of southwestern India. It was later listed as a Monument of National Importance, bringing it under government protection.
The five circular stone blocks on the western wall show that offerings were a central part of the burial practice here. The benches along the walls suggest that more than one person took part in the ceremonies held inside.
The chamber is entered through a single narrow opening on the eastern side, so sturdy footwear is a good idea. The interior is low and confined, and taking time to move slowly lets you notice the details carved into the walls and ceiling.
The hemispherical ceiling of this tomb is unusual for the region and sets it apart from most other prehistoric rock-cut graves in Kerala. Shaping a curved vault directly from solid rock required a level of skill that few sites in the area show.
