Kudakkallu Parambu, Prehistoric burial site in Chermanangad, India.
Kudakkallu Parambu is a megalithic burial ground in Thrissur district, India, where around 69 stone monuments are spread across an open field. The stones are arranged in several formations, including umbrella-shaped groupings and circular clusters, each linked to a different type of burial.
The site dates to the Iron Age and is among the oldest known burial grounds in the Kerala region. It is protected as a Monument of National Importance by the Archaeological Survey of India.
The burial ground shows how ancient people honored their dead through stone arrangements and ritual objects placed in graves. Visitors can observe how different stone formations were positioned to mark sacred burial spaces.
The ground is mostly flat and easy to walk across, with the stone monuments spread out and clearly visible. Because there is little shade, visiting in the cooler morning hours and wearing sturdy shoes makes the experience more comfortable.
The name Kudakkallu means umbrella stones in the local language, a direct reference to the shape of the largest stone formations on the site. Some of these stones were arranged so that a flat capstone rests on top of upright supports, creating a silhouette that resembles an open umbrella.
