Akluj Fort, Military fort in Solapur district, India.
Akluj Fort is a stone structure positioned 487 meters above sea level on the banks of River Nira with traditional military architectural features typical of Maharashtra. The fortress includes defensive walls, watchtowers, and interior spaces that once served administrative and protective purposes.
The fort was founded in the 13th century by Yadav king Raja Singhan and endured invasions and occupations over successive centuries. Control passed from Mughal hands to the British before becoming part of independent India.
The fiber sculptures inside the fort depict scenes from Shivaji Maharaj's life and tell stories of the region's warrior traditions. These artworks are visible throughout the fortress, offering visitors a direct look at how local history is remembered here.
The fort is easily accessible by paths leading upward from the base, and visitors typically explore the main areas in about one hour. It helps to arrive early in the day to enjoy better light and avoid the afternoon heat.
A significant historical event occurred when Sambhaji Maharaj and 26 companions were brought to the fort after being captured by Mukarrab Khan from Sangameshwar. This moment remains deeply embedded in local memory and stories.
