Baker Hostel, University dormitory in Kolkata, India
Baker Hostel is a university dormitory in Kolkata, India, spread across two buildings that together house a large number of residents. It has a library, computer rooms, a gymnasium, and a mosque available to those living there.
The hostel was founded in 1910 by Edward Norman Baker, who was then Lieutenant Governor of Bengal. A student movement led by Nawab Abdul Jabbar had pushed for better housing conditions before the building came to be.
The hostel is closely tied to Maulana Azad College and houses mainly Muslim students from different parts of India. Daily life brings together a range of regional habits and languages, all within a shared focus on study.
Rooms are generally available for the full length of a study program and are mainly intended for students of Maulana Azad College. Outside visitors should ask in advance, as open spots are limited.
Two rooms inside the hostel hold a small museum dedicated to Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, the first president of Bangladesh. The space displays personal objects and a library focused on his life.
