Phuguri Tea Estate, Tea garden in Darjeeling district, India.
Phuguri Tea Estate is a tea garden in the mountainous Darjeeling district that spreads across steep slopes at elevations between 1000 and 1800 meters. The tea plants grow in terraced rows to prevent erosion and enable proper management across the uneven terrain.
The estate was founded in the 1880s after Chinese tea plants were introduced to the region. A settler brought approximately one thousand Nepalese workers at that time to develop and operate the plantation.
The estate is shaped by local workers and families who tend the tea plants daily, blending traditional harvesting methods with contemporary farming techniques. The work on the slopes follows a generational rhythm where harvest seasons and rest periods define community life.
The estate lies about 7 kilometers from Mirik town and is also accessible from Darjeeling, with guided visits available year-round. The best time to visit is during harvest season when active work on the fields can be observed and workers can be seen in action.
The estate focuses on a specialized tea variety called Tippy Clonal, which is grown from hybrid clones rather than seeds. This method ensures consistent quality and allows producers to reliably deliver the same flavor and texture from year to year.
