Yadahalli Chinkara Wildlife Sanctuary, Wildlife sanctuary for Indian gazelles in Bagalkot, India.
Yadahalli Chinkara Wildlife Sanctuary is a protected area with shrubland and rocky terrain in Karnataka, providing habitat for gazelles, wolves, jackals, and hyenas. Two rivers bound the sanctuary and supply water to sustain wildlife throughout different seasons.
The sanctuary was established in 2016 as Karnataka's first dedicated protected area for chinkaras, created to safeguard this rare gazelle species. Since then, conservation efforts have contributed to growth in the animal population and stronger protection measures.
The sanctuary takes its name from the chinkara gazelle found here, an animal familiar to local communities in the region. Visitors can observe how residents support conservation efforts and participate in protecting the area from illegal activities.
The best time to visit is during drier months when wildlife viewing is easier and access roads are more passable. A local guide is recommended and sturdy footwear is essential, as the terrain is rocky and uneven.
The sanctuary is home to more than 80 tree species, some found only in southern India and others classified globally as vulnerable. This botanical diversity makes the protected area important for preserving rare plant species from disappearing.
