Chaharmahal and Bakhtiari Province

Chaharmahal and Bakhtiari Province is a mountainous region in west-central Iran with elevations ranging from 1,000 to 4,000 meters. The varied terrain covers approximately 16,000 square kilometers and is crisscrossed by several major rivers.

Archaeological findings show human settlements in the region dating back around nine thousand years. The area played an important role in pre-Islamic cultures and retained significance through successive periods.

The Bakhtiari tribes shape the region through their pastoral traditions, which you can observe in villages and at local markets. Their colorful clothing and traditional music are woven into everyday life and celebrations throughout the area.

The best time to visit is between April and September, when weather is milder and roads are passable. Winter months bring temperatures below minus 30 degrees Celsius and snow can block mountain passes for extended periods.

The region contains the sources of major rivers like the Zayanderud and Karoon, which carry water hundreds of kilometers to cities and farmland. These water sources have been critical to settlement and development across surrounding areas for thousands of years.
