Kashan, Desert oasis city in Isfahan Province, Iran
Kashan is a city in Isfahan Province situated at about 942 meters elevation where the Kuhrud Mountains transition into Iran's central desert. The settlement spreads across slopes and valleys with traditional mudbrick houses, narrow lanes, and a historic bazaar displaying handcrafted goods and daily goods.
Excavations at the nearby Tappe Sialk site show human settlements from 6000 BCE and early metalwork from 4000 BCE. The city later became a major center for ceramic and textile production along ancient trade routes.
The name Kashan comes from the Persian word for tile, reflecting the city's medieval ceramic tradition. Today textile workshops shape the local economy and daily life.
The city sits on the Qom-Zahedan railway line, connecting travelers to other Iranian cities with an east-west route across the country. Visitors should know that summer months are very hot and the nearby mountain and desert terrain require sunscreen and plenty of water.
