Alamut, Mountain region in Qazvin Province, Iran.
Alamut is a mountain region along the western edge of the Alborz mountains in Qazvin Province. It stretches between the Qazvin plains and the forested slopes of Mazandaran, and contains at least twenty medieval fortresses, with the main castle sitting on a steep rock formation at 2,163 meters elevation.
In 1090, Hassan-i Sabbah founded the headquarters of the Nizari Ismaili state at Alamut Castle. From this base, a network of fortresses spread across territories in Iran and Iraq.
The region remains linguistically diverse today, with Tati spoken by local communities and Gilaki and Mazandarani heard in areas near provincial borders. This linguistic landscape shapes daily communication and local identity.
The region is spread across mountainous terrain over a large area, making exploration time-consuming. Visitors should prepare for longer journeys and plan their hiking routes carefully.
The area contains Ovan Lake along with rice fields, orchards, and natural springs that create pockets of green in the mountain landscape. This blend of water, farming, and peaks creates an unexpectedly varied terrain.
